Pediatric dermatology is a growing subspecialty of dermatology that covers all the aspects of skin disorders occurring in children. There are numerous textbooks of dermatology worldwide, but there are only a few countable textbooks dedicated to pediatric dermatology. There is a need for such a book in our Indian scenario as the clinical presentation in our country varies from western countries. This third edition of a color atlas and a synopsis of pediatric dermatology is a comprehensive book comprising all skin related disorders in the pediatric age group. The author of this book, Dr. Sandipan Dhar is a well-known pediatric dermatologist in India and with his immense knowledge and experience, he has compiled good clinical images with a practical approach to their diagnosis and management.
This book is will be helpful for a pediatric dermatologist, practicing dermatologists, pediatricians and postgraduates in pediatric and dermatology specialties. It is written in simple language which can be understood easily by the readers. This book contains more than 1000 illustrations and 300 entities. It focuses on basic concepts of skin, care of newborn, neonatal dermatosis, various nevi, infections and infestations, genetic disorders, eczematous conditions, papulo-squamous disorders, vesiculo-bullous disorders, pigmentary disorders, nutritional skin disorders, metabolic disorders, vasculitis, collagen vascular disorders, adverse drug reactions, and miscellaneous dermatoses.
Atopic dermatitis is the most common eczematous condition seen in children. Dr. Sandipan Dhar is an expert in the field of atopic dermatitis with various research publications and is known both at national as well as international level. He has illustrated in detail the classical and atypical presentations of atopic dermatitis. This is very helpful for pediatricians to recognize the condition. Various rare genetic disorders have been described. The different types of syndromic and non-syndromic ichthyoses have been illustrated with good clinical images. Bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections have been dealt in detail. The most common teenage issues such as acne vulgaris, scars and pigmentary disorders are described. Various clinical images of hair and nail disorders have been illustrated. Another unique feature described in this book is sexual abuse and sexually transmitted diseases in children and their diagnosis and management. Chancre, condyloma acuminata, and herpes genitalis can present in children and dermatologists should be aware of these conditions for early intervention and proper counseling.
Emphasis has been laid on patient education and counseling. Counseling parents about the disease and its prognosis is an important aspect in pediatric dermatology. Etiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of each illustration have been concisely described in this textbook. Overall this entire book provides a feast of common and rare dermatoses seen in the pediatric age group. I would strongly recommend it for every postgraduate in dermatology, as well as for faculty alike. This book should be in the library of every medical college.
