The IADVL Research Compendium is a comprehensive textbook detailing various aspects of research, particularly in the context of dermatology. I am not aware of many books on this subject, and this book seeks to fill this unmet need.
The table of contents is divided into different sections, each having a common theme, which makes it easy to find a particular chapter. The author and reviewer list have a good mix of young and experienced dermatologists, as well as researchers from other fields. The book, through its 25 chapters, covers several important and practical aspects of research methodology, right from planning the research, to actually conducting it. Chapters on research funding, biomedical ethics and writing the manuscript and finally getting it published add value to the book. A separate section on checklists for different study designs serves as a ready reckoner in one place.
Chapters are written well, replete with dermatology-relevant scenarios and make for enjoyable reading. However, the use of non-standard acronyms such as SCD, CSU, CPP, ICD and ICF among others could have been avoided, and the full expansion used at all places for better reading flow. Figures and tables are well prepared and easy to follow. A bulleted summary at the end of every chapter allows a quick recap. The MCQs and exercises at the end of each chapter allow the reader to evaluate themselves and are a thoughtful addition.
To sum up, the IADVL Research Compendium is an excellent book which will be useful for not only dermatology post-graduate students but also their thesis supervisors as well as other clinicians with research interests. The book is highly recommended for medical college libraries. It is easily available, including several online platforms. The editorial team and authors deserve accolades for their effort.
