I was honoured when Dr. Thappa invited me to write the editorial for this symposium on "Pediatric Dermatology". I feel pediatric dermatology has come a long way. This symposium is the first of its kind in IJDVL. I thank our editor Dr. Thappa for giving pediatric dermatology due recognition that it deserves.

In this symposium, several of my colleagues who have special interest in pediatric dermatology have contributed, with due stress on current understanding of etio-pathogenesis and treatment.

I feel that rapid urbanization, nuclear family formation and the need for both parents to earn have exposed children to more abuses. Dr. Emertcan and Eartan from Turkey have very nicely elucidated cutaneous manifestations and management of child abuse. Transient cutaneous lesions predominate in the neonatal period. Yet, a few uncommon skin diseases in this period are serious and life threatening and need urgent recognition and treatment. Dr. Ragunatha and Inamadar and Dr. Sarkar and Garg have discussed emergencies and their management in the neonatal period. Dr. Panda has discussed about the emerging treatments in scleroderma. Two common dermatoses in children are psoriasis and lichen planus. Dr. Dogra and Kaur discuss various treatment options for psoriasis while Dr. Kanwar and De have given an overview of lichen planus in children.

I wish to thank all the contributors of this symposium. I hope all of us who are involved in the care of children will benefit from this symposium. It will kindle an interest in pediatric dermatology amongst young dermatologists and postgraduates
