I am pleasantly surprised to get the feel of this beautifully printed post-graduate textbook of dermatology. The editors and publishers both deserve adulation for this completely fresh and young version of a ‘not-too-heavy’ book for the post-graduates. The book certainly has a ‘wow’ factor that will attract readers. The author list boasts of a mix of experience and young talent and inspires confidence.
The section on basics in dermatology is particularly enchanting as it begins with the history of dermatology. Personally, I would have loved to see IJDVL indexing in the timeline and mention of all other Indian subspecialty journals for post-graduate awareness, especially as most of them are open access publications. The other chapters in this section give up-to-date information but authors would do well to add more photographs for the clinical signs and bedside tests chapter.
The text of each chapter is well classified into helpful subheadings. Moreover, numerous summarising tables break the monotony of the text and make for easy reading. Pictures are of good quality and drive home the legends. However, their number could have been increased, especially for the commoner conditions.
While some of the chapters are well referenced, some others lack referencing adequate enough to satisfy a curious student. Still others have only a list for further reading. A post-graduate textbook deserves uniform and adequate referencing to guide future research and I am sure that the editors will improve upon this aspect in the next edition, which I guess will be sooner than later.
In short, this two-volume, 1500-page treatise is a must-read for post-graduates and is expected to occupy the bookshelves of many a practitioner. The book provides a bonus for post-graduates towards the end, in the form of past question papers from many universities. I wish the editors, Dr. Koushik Lahiri and Dr. Abhishek De, unhindered success and many future editions.
