It is difficult to cover a vast subject like pediatric dermatology in a simple, elegant, easy to read and yet comprehensive format, but the editors of the textbook of pediatric dermatology have managed this in their maiden effort. The book is well planned and categorized into topics and subtopics for easy reference. The excellent print quality and the single volume, slim, portable format makes it a pleasure to read.
The topics are wide ranging and include all aspects of common conditions such as infections and eczemas and also rarer conditions such as genodermatoses and cutaneous manifestations of systemic or neoplastic diseases in the pediatric age group. The authors have provided good classifications and have included a large number of tables for further clarifying the subject matter. The book is colorful and attractive in layout, with a large number of clinical images. However, some of these images are not as clear as they should ideally be. Certain topics of practical relevance such as the premature infant, mosaicism, differences between viral exanthems and exanthematous drug reactions and pityriasis versicolor perhaps require to be covered in greater detail. Future editions will most likely address these small issues.
Overall, the reader will be impressed by the textbook of pediatric dermatology. Any student of dermatology, a practicing dermatologist treating skin problems in children, a budding pediatric dermatologist or even a pediatrician will benefit from reading and referring to this book. I congratulate the editors and all the authors for their painstaking efforts in putting together this useful addition to the practice of pediatric dermatology in India.
