Isolated discoid lupus erythematosus of the lower eyelid

A 35-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of a plaque on her left lower eyelid. Examination revealed an erythematous plaque measuring 2 cm × 1 cm with adherent scales associated with loss of eyelashes [Figure - 1]. There were no lesions elsewhere. A skin biopsy was consistent with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). Antinuclear antibodies were negative. She was treated with a mid-potent topical steroid and photoprotection. Eyelid involvement in discoid lupus erythematosus can present as chronic blepharitis, erythematous plaques, or chronic eyelid edema. If left untreated, complications such as trichiasis, ectropion, entropion, madarosis and epiphora may occur.
